A captivating programme of Classical and Romantic masterpieces, including rediscovered gems and enduring favourites. Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture full of comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements based on the legend of Don Juan; Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto championed by Yehudi Menuhin; Fauré’s enchanting Nocturne from Shylock transporting listeners to a moonlit Venetian night and finally Symphony No.1 by Emilie Mayer which was written only two years later than the Mendelssohn. A powerful and expressive piece sadly neglected during her lifetime.
