Formed in 1992 whilst they were in the Royal Navy, Jenkins' Ear have built up a big repertoire of British, American and French sea songs: rousing shanties, forebitters, their own songs and songs by Cyril Tawney and many other famous singers of this genre.

They have performed at regattas, festivals and folk clubs across Europe, blending authenticity with entertainment and humorous anecdotes.

Shanty songs were traditionally sung by sailors as they hauled up the sails as they set off to sea. But the timeless tunes remain popular today with their blend of lilting tunes and folksy words harking back to bygone days on the briny.

Forebitters, nautical Country and Western, were sung ashore or when off watch, when someone had died, lost their true love, or been badly mistreated or they were an opportunity to make bawdy and disrespectful comment on the officers.

Jenkins' Ear also sing many songs celebrating events, battles, victories and tragedies, some historic (eg the death of Nelson), some contemporary (eg the stoppage of Tot) and some which are just plain fun.

Full of harmonies and skilful instrument playing, their music is easy on the ear and gives a genuine taste of the sea, without too much salt (to harden the arteries?).
