ARTISTS LUNCHTIME CRIT – ILLUSTRATION SPECIAL // LED BY JHINUK SARKAR

Taking place every last Saturday of the month, our free lunchtime crits give artists a chance to get feedback on their work from a practicing artist in a supportive and friendly environment.

August’s crit will be led by illustrator and Turf Head of Community & Accessibility Jhinuk Sarkar. This session will have a particular focus on illustration but all forms of creative work are welcomed.

Feel free to bring along food to eat and share during this lunchtime session if you like!

Participation isn’t mandatory – you’re welcome to simply come and view the works and take part in the discussions.

// ABOUT JHINUK SARKAR

Jhinuk Sarkar is an illustrator and arts educator.

Working closely with disabled artists over the last five years led her to her current roles at Turf Projects as Head of Community & Accessibility, teaching in an arts university, and supporting disabled students learning arts subjects in higher education. Her inspiration for producing images comes from an interest in relationships and this originates from a sense of belonging, her own cross-cultural upbringing (between Britain and India) and documenting cultural social differences in subtle ways. Diversity and representation are the underpinning of ideas in a lot of her work, though she enjoys the challenge to illustrate complicated and sensitive subjects and equally illuminate the simplicity of a brief with a strong, but singular concept.

Ephemera and places that evoke memories and feelings are also a starting point of ideas for her illustrations. Humour can also feed a way into her work in various forms. Colour, texture and hand-drawn text play large aspects in her image making. She is especially inspired by typography and the organic elements of biology.

She has worked on community arts-based projects through various arts organisations using different art forms, from visual arts to performing and cross-disciplinary arts. She has worked with a variety of education teams including House of Illustration, Francis Crick Institute, British Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, National Gallery, Museum of London, Hackney Museum, Nuneaton Museum and the Cadbury Research Library in Birmingham.

More recently she has become interested in portraying the sensory awareness we individualise in our work through Synaesthesia. This is the focus and influence she will bring to Turf’s next Artist Crit. Jhinuk’s experience of working with disabled artists and developing knowledge of Disability Arts will feed into this session.
